Berghaus pioneered numerous outdoor innovations that became industry standards. The brand created the Cyclops rucksack in 1974 – the world’s first internal frame backpack – and introduced Europe’s first Gore-Tex garments in 1977. Their groundbreaking Gemini jacket in the 1980s featured the first zip-in fleece system, revolutionising layering systems for mountaineers.
Beyond technical innovation, Berghaus gained cultural significance during the original rave scene of the late 80s and early 90s. The brand’s colourful, block-pattern Gore-Tex jackets became essential gear for outdoor festivals and illegal raves, providing warmth and waterproof protection in muddy fields across the UK while defining a distinctive street style aesthetic.
The Deluge Pro 3.0 leads Berghaus’s waterproof range, offering reliable protection with a 28,000mm hydrostatic head rating in a lightweight, packable design perfect for hiking and mountaineering. The Prism Micro InterActive Polartec fleece remains a customer favourite for its versatility and temperature regulation.
Popular models currently include:
Ridge-Seeker Gore-Tex Jacket – Premium 3-layer protection with eco-friendly ePE membrane
Urban Arkos Reflect Down Jacket – Technical insulation for urban and mountain environments
Prism InterActive Fleece – Modular fleece system compatible with outer shells
Expeditor Trek 2.0 Boots – Durable hiking footwear with Vibram soles
Hottar Hybrid Insulated Jacket – Synthetic fill combining warmth with breathability
Berghaus follows consistent UK sizing across their range with three distinct fit categories. Technical fit offers close, ergonomic cuts for active pursuits with strategic layering allowances. Active fit provides balanced performance and comfort for versatile outdoor use. Relaxed fit delivers classic cuts with generous room for layering underneath.
For jackets, chest measurements run from 84-89cm (XS/Small) through 122-127cm (XXL), with arm lengths ranging from 82.5cm to 93cm. Women’s sizing follows UK dress sizes 8-20, corresponding to chest measurements from 81cm to 112cm. If between sizes, consider your intended use – size up for heavy layering or down for close-fitting technical performance.

Chest/Bust: Wrap tape around the fullest part of the chest or bust with arms relaxed at sides
Waist: Measure at the narrowest point of the waist, typically above the belly button
Hip: Measure at the fullest part of the hips, with feet together
Fit Notes: Berghaus offers three fit options—Technical (close-fit), Regular (standard layering), and Relaxed (room for heavy layering). For technical garments, select your true size; for regular or relaxed fit, consider sizing up if you plan to layer insulated mid-layers.
Proper maintenance extends the life of technical fabrics and waterproof treatments. For Gore-Tex and waterproof garments, machine wash at 30°C using non-biological detergent or specialist technical wash like Nikwax Tech Wash. Never use biological detergent, fabric softener, or bleach as these damage waterproof membranes.
Essential care steps include:
Brush off dirt before washing and close all zips and velcro
Use non-biological detergent or technical wash products
Machine wash on gentle cycle with slow spin at 30°C maximum
Tumble dry on low heat to reactivate DWR (Durable Water Repellent)
Re-proof with products like Nikwax TX Direct when water stops beading
The heat from tumble drying is crucial for reactivating the DWR treatment that makes water bead off the fabric surface. If tumble drying isn’t available, iron on gentle heat with a protective cloth to achieve the same effect and restore water repellency.
